From the first years of the foundation of Yerevan State University, along with research in natural and social sciences, Armenian Studies were largely focused on, too.
In 1968, with the aim of giving a new turn to the development of Armenian Studies at Yerevan State University, an offer was made to open a special research laboratory. The laboratory was created through the efforts of the full members of the ArmSSR National Academy of Sciences M. Nersisyan and Ed. Aghayan.
The newly formed laboratory was to coordinate not only organizational, but also the research work at the faculties of humanities, which developed the Armenian studies topics. In future, the laboratory was renamed into the Center for Armenian Studies of YSU, which developed large-scale activities.
Many books of great interest from the standpoint of the Armenian Studies have been published and republished. On the basis of the Centre for Armenian Studies on July 10, 2008 Academic Council of Yerevan State University made a decision to open the Institute for Armenian Studies, which combined the Centre for Armenian Studies of Yerevan State University, Laboratory of Archaeological Researches, Laboratory of Historical Geography and Cartography of Armenia, Centre for Armenian-Georgian Relations and Department of Armenian-Ottoman Relations.
The following divisions and laboratories operate at the Institute for Armenian Studies:

• Department of Armenian-Georgian Relations
• Department of Armenian-Ottoman relations
• Department of Armenian-Kurdish Relations
• Laboratory of Archeological Research
• Department of Virtual Armenology and Information
• Department of Genocide Studies
Director of the Institute for Armenian Studies is the Corresponding Member of the National Academy of Sciences of Armenia, Doctor of History, Professor Aram Simonyan.
